You’ve decided to buy a motorhome so you can travel freely with your family or friends. However, before taking the plunge, you need to be aware of the different purchasing criteria to consider. Here are a few tips to help you find the right motorhome for your needs.
Choosing the right type of motorhome
As with cars, there are several types of motorhome: profile, cabriolet, van, integral…
The profile is appreciated for its compactness and good layout. It’s discreet, easy to drive and offers good visibility on the road. For all these reasons, it’s the best-selling motorhome.
The nasturtium, recognizable by its sleeping area above the cab, has a certain charm but is not very aerodynamic.
With its small dimensions, the van is easy to handle and very affordable. The ideal solution for couples.
In an integral motorhome, the cabin is perfectly integrated with the other living areas. It’s spacious, comfortable and attractive, but also very expensive (minimum €50,000 new).
Think carefully about dimensions
Some buyers think big and want a spacious motorhome. However, traffic and parking in town are a real problem for some owners. Choose a tall, long and wide motorhome only if you plan to travel all year round for long periods.
Find out about the options available
Gas heating, large refrigerator, roof window, air conditioning, satellite antenna, awning, bike rack: take a close look at the basic equipment of the motorhome you’re considering.
Start with a rental
If you don’t yet know which motorhome is right for you, it’s a good idea to start with a rental. You’ll become familiar with the vehicle, its conditions of use (campsites, areas reserved for motorhomes) and this new way of life.
Think budget, down payment and resale
Of course, financial considerations also play a part. If you’re on a budget, consider a used motorhome. If possible, make a down payment of 20% of the purchase price. If you’re thinking of reselling your motorhome one day, find out which models and makes are most in demand.
